Ammi Said Institute
The fourth English language camp report
Every summer the institute of Ammi Said organises an English language camp for students of the third and fourth year middle School, and the first and second Secondary school. This summer 2012 is the fourth year since it was found in 2008.
The camp took place in the Institute of Ammi Said, and there were 17 trainees, 04 qualified teachers and 02 assistants.
The camp was organised to fulfil the following objectives:
1) Self motivation: By the end the camp the trainees will be able to learn English on their own without a teacher, by making them like English language.
2) They will be able to speak English confidently in public.
3) They will be able to write correct and simple sentences in English.
4) Contributing in managing students’ time during the holidays.
To achieve the above goals, trainees were receiving intensive courses for 7 days from Friday June, 22nd to 29th 2012.
The program was designed carefully to fit students’ needs; however, it was based on the daily life activities and objects around them, so that students will interact easily with different subjects using English language. In addition, most parts of the program were selected to improve the four skills of learning a language, for example there were plenty presentations, dialogues and activities in listening, speaking, reading and writing.
Also, there were other activities designed for specific purposes such as in Listening and Reading comprehension in which these activities aim to enable students to acquire techniques of listening and reading; as well as having knowledge and culture of natives English language speakers community.
English for leisure: this activity tended to give students an opportunity to live and practice English language in deferent circumstances outside the classroom in relaxed manner, therefore, there were 02 excursions, the first was to Dar El Quran for swimming, and the second was to the garden of the headmaster Mr. Mustafa Kara which situated in Lachbour fields where students conducted practical workshops concerning garden and gardening vocabulary and knowledge.
Tea talk: this part is a free space for students to express their knowledge and ideas about a given topic. The aim is to help students to overcome their fear of speaking English in public, and to learn techniques of making conversation. Also there was a special guest: Mr. Mahfoud Toumi who was invited to talk with students about self motivation for learning English.
Besides learning English language, the camp offers an opportunity to students to strength their identity and to gain some positive social skills by making them learn in team and do some services to each others in group.
By the end of this camp, students were very happy, satisfied and willing if it was possible to extend the period of training to 15 days but unfortunately the circumstances were not in our side; or if it will be possible to organise such camps like this in winter and spring holidays.
Finally, we thank all trainees for their excellent behaviour and cooperation in harmony between them, also a big thank to the headmaster Mr. Mustafa Kara, to the teachers and to other administrators for their help and trust in me to organise and supervise this camp though it was the first time for me. Another special thank to Mr. Azzeddin babaoumossa for his advices and consultation with me during the camp on pedagogical issues.
Recommendations:
- Pupils need more practice in listening to native English.
- There must be a free space for students to use English language like clubs, peaking corner, magazines.
- Advertising for the camp should be earlier at least by a month.
